Broken WindshieldYou may feel like your auto insurance policy is written in another language, due to some unfamiliar words and abbreviations. One item that may be listed is "Comprehensive" — or "Comp" for short. While you've probably heard the term before, you may not know what it covers.

What is Comprehensive Coverage?

Comprehensive covers damage or loss to your vehicle that isn't the result of a collision with another vehicle. Some of the most common examples include vandalism, theft, fires, natural disasters (such as tornadoes or hurricanes), collisions with animals or falling items — such as trees. If you see comprehensive listed on your policy, then you can rest assured, knowing you are covered should any of these events or items damage your vehicle.

Do I Need It?

Many people drop comprehensive coverage for an older vehicle as a way of saving money on their premium. There is no magic formula for making this decision, because it depends on each person's situation. When a car has depreciated and is not worth much, then they often remove it from their policy.

Another situation that arises involves a car that still has a lien on it from a lender. If you still owe money on the vehicle, check with the lender to see if they require you to have comprehensive coverage.

Before you remove comprehensive coverage from your vehicle, think over the scenario carefully. If your car was a total loss, would you have a way to replace it? Or if you still owe money on it, are you prepared to continue making payments, even if the car is no longer usable? If either of these situations puts you in a financially stressful situation, it might be best to leave comprehensive coverage on your policy for your peace of mind.
